Guidance to help ensure your mail and parcels reach their destination safely and on time, with tips from the Consumer Council
The Consumer Council has provided helpful tips to make sure parcels and mail arrive safely and on time this festive season. Businesses can also use these tips to improve their delivery process.
The Consumer Council’s top tips are:
- Check last posting dates – the last posting date for second-class post is Friday 18 December 2024, and for first-class post is Monday 20 December 2024. For the latest information, visit Royal Mail’s website. If you’re using other courier services, check their last posting dates to avoid delays.
- Use valid barcoded stamps – make sure you use barcoded stamps when sending letters and parcels. Royal Mail no longer accepts non-barcoded stamps, and using them could lead to delays and extra charges for your customers.
- Shop around for the best postage rates – compare postage providers regularly to find the best deals. Offering economy options like second-class post can save money while still providing good service. If you’re sending parcels, avoid unnecessary surcharges.
- Weigh and measure parcels accurately – check the size and weight of your parcels before sending to avoid paying higher fees unnecessarily.
- Use compensation policies for high-value items – declare what you’re sending and confirm that the courier’s compensation policy covers your item. Check the list of prohibited items to ensure your parcels comply with postal regulations.
- Understand customs requirements – for parcels going to destinations outside the UK and EU, make sure you fill in the required customs declarations.
