Everyday Engineering competition

Apply for a chance to develop your ideas with experts and high-profile entrepreneurs

To mark the National Engineering Day on 1 November 2023, the Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng) is inviting individuals and teams across the UK to release their inner engineer. 

Through their 'Everyday Engineering' competition, they are inviting entries from people with ideas and innovations that make, or could make, our daily lives more sustainable.

From the ideas that exist on paper to the innovations that exist as a prototype, sustainable innovation is something that's making our daily lives function in a less wasteful way – in terms of energy, finances or resources.

It is also something that is central to achieving the UK's Net Zero goals and creating a more sustainable future for both people and planet.

Once submissions close, entries will be reviewed by a judging panel and voted on by the public on 1 November to decide the nation's favourite sustainable idea or innovation on social media.

The winner will receive a prize package including:

• feedback on their idea from a BBC Dragon's Den investor
• mentoring from RAEng Enterprise Hub on how to turn the idea into a product
• a trophy from RAEng and national publicity

To apply, you can complete the entry form online or share your innovation on social media, tagging 'This is Engineering' social media channels and using the hashtags #EverydayEngineering #NationalEngineeringDay in order to be considered.

Entries can be submitted by individuals or teams residing in the UK, of any age.

Entries can be an original idea or a prototype. However, if you are intending to develop the prototype or idea commercially, you should make all reasonable efforts to protect the intellectual property of the creation. Find out how to protect your ideas.
