UK joins European supercomputing initiative

On Monday 13 May 2024, the UK became a member of the European High-Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC) initiative

The membership secures enhanced access to European supercomputing resources and funding for UK researchers, businesses, and academics.

What is EuroHPC?

EuroHPC is a collaborative programme of 35 countries, offering access to cutting-edge computing facilities, and funding provided by Horizon Europe.

The UK joined Horizon Europe in 2023 after three years out of the programme following the European referendum. Under the association deal, the UK already had access to the EuroHPC supercomputers for research purposes.

However, full membership of the EuroHPC now enables UK businesses and researchers to access the Horizon Europe-funded portion of the scheme, worth over £770 million between 2021 to 2027.

This enhanced access to resources and funding is expected to strengthen the UK's computational capabilities, and accelerate the development of ground-breaking discoveries, from innovative medical treatments to clean energy solutions and more.

How to access EuroHPC funds?

To bid for EuroHPC grants, UK researchers and businesses will have to secure match funding from the UK government on a case-by-case basis. More information on how this will work will be provided in due course.

Researchers can apply for time on EuroHPC systems and for Horizon-funded research and innovation grants on the EuroHPC website.
