Invest Northern Ireland (Invest NI) is the first point of contact when it comes to research and development (R&D) support in Northern Ireland.

As an economic development agency, it helps individuals, and small, medium and large-sized businesses in the region research and develop technologically innovative products and processes.

Invest NI R&D grant support

Invest NI provides funding support to eligible businesses planning or undertaking research and development (R&D) projects. This funding is available to businesses that are already Invest NI clients or meet the eligibility criteria.

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) can apply for grant rates of up to 70% (up to a maximum of £100,000 in grant support). SME applications for this funding initiative are considered on a first-come, first-served basis. Invest NI is accepting applications for up to 70% grant rates until Friday 31 January 2025.

The funding can help:

• scope, define and plan an R&D project
• support research or critical investigation aimed at producing new scientific or technical knowledge
• support product/process development or improvements
• assist in developing leading-edge technology    
• increase business productivity
• link to a college or university to collaborate on strategically important projects

To qualify for this support:

• you must be an Invest NI customer or meet the funding eligibility criteria
• you must be able to provide match funding (normally 50 per cent) against the total cost of the project

Gateway to other R&D support

If you don't qualify for an Invest NI R&D grant, Invest NI's innovation advisers may be able to signpost you to other sources of UK innovation funding, help you access collaborative R&D support or small business research initiative, or put you in touch with potential partners in local colleges, universities and other companies.
