If you want to employ young people you need to be aware of your legal responsibilities. In general, younger workers are those under 18 years old.
This guide provides an overview of the law relating to young people at different stages of their lives.
It includes information on:
- employing workers of compulsory school age (in Northern Ireland, a young person can leave school on 30 June if they are aged 16 years old on or before 1 July of that year - if their 16th birthday falls on or after 2 July they have to wait until the end of the following academic year before they are eligible to leave)
- employing workers over compulsory school age and under 18
- employing workers aged 18 or over
- apprenticeships
- internships
